Kitano, Miyazaki and Oshii go head to head at this year’s Venice Film Festival

by Chris MaGee

This morning the 65th Annual Venice International Film Festival announced the films that will be in competition once the fest gets underway August 27th, and fans of Japanese cinema have something to be excited about. Takeshi Kitano’s “Achilles and the Tortoise”, Hayao Miyzaki’s “Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea” and Mamoru Oshii’s “The Sky Crawlers” will all be competing for the coveted Golden Lion.

Of course Kitano famously took home a Golden Lion for his 1997 film “Hana-Bi”, the first time a Japanese director had done so since Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon” did the same in 1951. Last year Kitano was the first recipient of Venice’s specially created “Glory to the Filmmaker! Award” named after Kitano’s 2007 avant tale of a director who’s in search of his next film idea.

This will be the second time competing for Hayao Miyazaki whose “Howl’s Moving Castle” was featured at the fest in 2004 and who picked up a special “Career Golden Lion” the following year for his contribution to the world of animation.

This will be the first time for Mamoru Oshii at Venice.

Also in competition will be Barbet Schroeder’s Edogawa Rampo adapation “Inju: La Bette dans L’Ombre” starring Ryu Ishibashi. Minoru Kawasaki’s kaiju send up “Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit” will be featured out of competition in the festival’s Midnight programme.
