It looks like the folks at Toei are giving the producers of Toho’s “Detroit Metal City” a run for their money in the shameless PR campaign department. While the studio has already made the rather ingenious move of not only streaming making-of videos of their upcoming Kankuro Kudo directed comedy “Shonen Merikensack” at its official site, but also screening them in Japanese theatres. Smart! But now the eagle eyes of Nippon Cinema have found out about the next… and totally shameless, and downright strange… step in the promotion of the film.
With the world oil crisis raising the price of a litre gasoline in Japan to record levels Toei has created special “Shonen Merikensack” bumper stickers that will get you a 5 yen per litre discount when you fill up at “Usami” gas stations. Okay, their hearts may be in the right place by trying to save the little guy from being gouged at the pumps, but the film they’re using for this promotion is about an aging punk band that gets rediscovered by a young PR agent played by Aoi Miyazaki, and frankly the idea of bumper stickers to save on gas just doesn’t seem very punk rock, y’know? Now, holding up a gas station Ronnie Biggs-style! That would be punk rock!
