Tadanobu Asano and Takako Matsu to play married couple in Osamu Dazai adaptation

by Chris MaGee

Fresh on the heels of news that Eriko Sato will be starring in an adaptation of author Osamu Dazai’s “The Setting Sun” there’s now word today from Tokyograph that director Kichitaro Negishi is prepping another Dazai adaptation which will star Takako Matsu (The Hidden Blade, Tokyo Tower) and Tadanobu Asano (Mongol, Vital).

“Viyon no Tsuma (Villon’s Wife)” will have Matsu playing Sachi, the wife of an alcoholic and abusive writer (Asano) who, if you do a little bit of research seems like a thinly veiled depiction of Osamu Dazai (pictured above in his gloriously messy workspace) one of Japan's most famed authors, as well as being a man who seems to have been seriously at odds with himself, drinking profusely and attempting suicide a number of times, finally succeeding in drowning himself in 1948 at the tragically young age of 39.

Apparently it took screenwriter Yôzô Tanaka (Zigeunerweisen, Wife to be Sacrificed) five years to finish the script for “Viyon no Tsuma”, but thankfully the project has now come to fruition and is set to begin filming in September.
