I saw this news posted by Marc Walkow at Outcast Cinema's blog yesterday morning, but trivial things like, oh, I dunno, eating and going to work got in the way of doing this story justice; but now that I'm typing this up I'm still giddy, so please excuse the scattered train of thought to follow.
Marc and his crew will be doing production work for upcoming DVD releases of Takeshi Kitano's first film "Violent Cop" and its follow up "Boiling Point (3-4 x jûgatsu)", two films that have had North American DVD releases before, but they were less than impressive and are now out of print. This time around Marc is partnering up with distributor BCI Eclipse to give these two films the DVD treatment they deserve (extras, interviews, liner notes, etc.). No word yet on a street date for these two DVDs yet though.
But wait! There's more! BCI Eclipse has also picked up the rights to Kitano's "A Scene at the Sea", "Getting Any?", "Kids Return", "Hana-bi" and "Takeshis'"! This is fantastic news for fans of Kitano, but I'm feeling like a bit of a chump for having dumped all that cash on the crappy DVD transfers of these films that I have in my collection. Guess it's time to trade up.
But wait! There even more! Besides the Kitano titles Marc has details on tons of other Japanese films coming to DVD in the near future. How does Sabu's "Unlucky Monkey" grab you? Or Hiroshi Teshigahara's "Rikyu" and "Basara: Princess Goh"? Or Kihachi Okamoto's "East meets West"? Plus more... so much more!
You'd best follow the link above to check out all the DVD goodness while I slip into a delirious coma for a bit. Wake me up when those Kitano DVDs get an official release date please...
