Even though it didn't unseat this year's box office giant" Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea" Toshio Lee's heavy metal manga adaptation "Detroit Metal City" had a very strong opening in Japan this past weekend with a ¥20 billion take nationwide.
As a lead up to the release the film's stars made promotional appearances at 11 theatres in 14 different prefectures across Japan. Over 6,000 fans got to greet Kenichi Matsuyama, Rosa Kato, Ryuuzi Akiyama, Yoshi Hosoda and director Lee; and while they didn't arrive in full makeup as their heavy metal alter egos the stars sported awesome "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's Detroit Metal City" t-shirts. (I want one! I want one!!!!)
And while we in Toronto (and North America for that matter) won't get a chance to see "Detroit Metal City" until it premieres as part of TIFF's Midnight Madness programme on September 5th, Kenichi Matsuyama hinted that this might not be the only time we see "DMC" rock out on the big screen. A sequel perchance???
