News broke over the weekend that Mamoru Oshii would be making a return to live action filmmaking with his contribution to the omnibus film "Kiru = Kill". The project has four different filmmakers directing action sequences each set up as if they were the climax to an existing film. Oshii's segment will be titled "Assault Girl 2" and stars Rinko Kikuchi and Yoko Fujita as two battling women, one dressed in black, the other in white.
This will be the second major outing for Oshii into live-action filmmaking. The director famous for his "Ghost in the Shell" anime films directed the Matrix-esque science fiction movie "Avalon" back in 2001 ( a film that I frankly wasn't that fond of).
This will also be the second time that Oshii has worked with Oscar-nominated Kikuchi. The actress has provided the voice for fighter pilot Suito Kusanagi in Oshii's upcoming animated film "The Sky Crawlers" which will be making it's North American premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.
"Kiru = Kill" is scheduled for release in Japan in December, so I'll be keeping my eye out for any pics or trailers. Thanks to Tokyograph for the story.
