Seijun Suzuki's next film an adult take on "Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea"?

by Chris MaGee

Yesterday we ran the exciting news of the possibility of a new film from legendary director Seijun Suzuki tentatively titled "A Goldfish Of The Flame"; but Jason Gray, who broke the story during his coverage of the 4th Annual Tokyo Project Gathering was nice enough to follow up with me with some additional information posted in our comments. There's some good stuff here, so I'm posting them here in their entirety:

"Keep in mind that while HAF and PPP have a good record of films getting made, TPG is still young and most of the projects don't get out of the starting gate. They're trying, though.

It'll be interesting to see if Suzuki himself shows up at the project presentation. The producer is old Nikkatsu director Kurahara Koretsugu, younger brother of Koreyoshi (Tokyo FILMeX retrospective this year).

The Japanese title of the project is Mitsu no Aware 『蜜のあわれ』 which is an erotic literary work by Murô Saisei about the relationship between an old man and his young female goldfish (who also transforms into human form)..."

An "erotic literary work" that sounds a hell of a lot like Hayao Miyazaki's latest blockbuster "Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea"... In-ter-est-ing. Let's hope that this project actually gets funding and sees the light of day (or darkness of a movie theatre).

For those of you who are inteterested here's more info about Murô Saisei courtesy of Everything2.com.

Have you heard anything more about this project. I just noticed on (the very unreliable) IMDB that it says "completed." I'm curious who is in it.

Cheers!
