Okay, I'm a convert! Nobuhiko Obayashi's "House" could be the weirdest film ever

by Chris MaGee

I had seen the reports popping up online about Nobuhiko Obayashi's obscure 1977 horror film "House" airing on IFC this month. Call me jaded, biased or just plain lazy, but I thought, "Okay, an old Japanese horror film dug out of mothballs. Why is everyone so excited?" Then I saw the stills that Patrick Macias posted at his blog and I got intrigued. A Google search on Obayashi later and I was watching the trailer and suddenly I was kicking myself for being so narrow minded. The buzz on this actually seems to be justified. A house that eats people alive? This could be one of the weirdest films ever... in fact Dario Argento may not be able to touch Nobuhiko Obayashi in the weird department.

Want to become a "House" convert too? Then check out this trailer:

Man, that looks like heaps-o-fun. Does an airing on IFC typically mean a DVD release is imminent?

Grady at Kaiju Shakedown reported that Criterion owns the US rights to "House" and they have just been sitting on them. They got an e-mail from me. I don't have cable and really want to see this movie!

I just watched the entire film and will have a review up tomorrow. This could be my favorite Japanese horror film ever!
