Mamoru Oshii and Rinko Kikuchi itching to bring us a full-length "Assault Girl"

by Chris MaGee

Here was a Christmas gift for Mamoru Oshii fans to cap off 2008. The "Ghost in the Shell" and "The Sky Crawlers" director's contribution to the recent "Kiru = Kill" omnibus film "Assault Girl 2" had the web buzzing through the year, mostly due to the fact that it featured break out star Rinko Kikuchi in some sword-wielding action against Yoko Fujita. Unfortunately the reviews online of the film have been uneven, but that doesn't seem to have taken the fight out of Oshii or Kikuchi.

According to a post over at Jason Gray's blog the director and star are itching to expand the short segment into a feature-length film. Now, whether this will be "Assault Girl 1" or even the start of production isn't known at the moment, but with these two big names gunning to get this made I don't think Japanese film fans will have to be waiting for more details for long.

Thanks to Mack at Twitch for the heads up.
