I was chatting with Outcast Cinema's Marc Walkow yesterday about Yojiro Takita's "Departures (Okuribito)" and both of us were wondering when Regent Releasing would finally introduce North America to the Japanese film phenomena. At the same time I added, "Well, what about 'Tokyo Sonata'? Regent's sitting on that as well," but Marc was kind enough to point out that that won't be the case for long.
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's latest and much-praised drama will open March 13th at the IFC Center in New Yorkas part of their Winter 2009 season. Good news for all you New Yorkers and hopefully good news for all of us in North America if Regent segues these limited theatrical releases into a DVD release sometime in the near future.
Click here to check out the full Winter 2009 line-up at IFC... and for all of you asking me when "Departures" is coming out in North America, I don't know! Yet.
Postscript: Just noticed that Regent has also posted an English trailer for "Tokyo Sonata" at Apple Trailers. Check it out here.
