And the winner of Midnight Eye's 2008 Reader's Poll is...

by Chris MaGee

Yes, folks Tom Mes, Jasper Sharp and the crew over at Midnight Eye have posted the results of their annual Reader's Poll of favorite films from 2008, and of the 62 films listed the one that topped the list was (what you haven't guessed already?) Kiyoshi Kurosawa's family drama "Tokyo Sonata", which Mes called "the director's masterpiece".

While I have immense respect and love for Midnight Eye I do have to say that it's very difficult to list which films came in the top ten of this poll as they have 3-way, 4-way and even 7-way ties for nearly every number from 1 to 9. So, barring the multitude of split decisions here are the top ten of the 62 films as they appear sequentially, and for the remainder of the list head on over to Midnight Eye here.

1. Tokyo Sonata - Kiyoshi Kurosawa
2. Adrift in Tokyo - Satoshi Miki
3. Still Walking - Hirokazu Kore-eda
4. The United Red Army - Koji Wakamatsu
5. Fine, Totally Fine - Yosuke Fujita
6. Memories of Matsuko - Tetsuya Nakashima
7. Sukiyaki Western Django - Takashi Miike
8. 5 Centimeters Per Second - Makoto Shinkai
9. Crows Zero - Takashi Miike
10. Sad Vacation - Shinji Aoyama

It seems hard to believe that "Django" would be on anyone's top 10 list, let alone a consensus list from the staff of ME. I haven't seen all the films listed there, but of the ones I have seen "Django"'s just not in the same league. Top marks for idiosyncratic vision, though.

Have to agree. It was one of Miike's weakest films in my opinion,
