Japanese R&B singer AI to make directorial debut

by Chris MaGee

Last year saw the omnibus film "R246 Story" released in Japan. A half dozen actors, tarento and Japanese hip-hop stars, including Tadanobu Asano and Shido Nakamura, participated by directing short films set on or around the 122.7 kilometre long Route 246 highway that runs from Chiyoda Ward's Miyakezaka district, through Tokyo and onto Numazu City in Shizuoka Prefecture. The reviews ended up being very mixed for the project, but doesn't seem to be a deterant for a similar film.

The name title of this next omnibus film is unknown, as is the unifying theme that will hold the various shorts together, but one thing we do know is that Japanese R&B singer AI will be making her directorial debut with her short segment to be titled "My Next Step". The film will apparently be based around the experiences of AI and her friends who work as choreographers and dancers.

Now, if you live in Japan you most likely know who AI is, but if you, like me, had to stop for a second and ask, "Who's that again?" here's a video reminder below. AI contributed a song, "What is a Life?", and appeared in the prison sequence in Tetsuya Nakashima's 2006 film "Memories of Matsuko".
