What's next for Takashi Miike? Some chanbara action, that's what

by Chris MaGee

Takashi Miike seems to be on a real winning streak of late. Not only was his live-action adaptation of the 1970's animated series "Yatterman" a huge success, but now his sequel to his own 2007 manga adaptation "Crows Zero" has been doing very respectable business at the Japanese box office. So what will be next for the man who was once known as the bad boy of Japanese filmmakers? Chanbara action, that's what.

According to a report over at Nippon Cinema the 48-year-old director will be teaming up with Toho and UK-based HanWay Films to helm a remake of the 1963 samurai action film "Juusan-nin no Shikaku (The 13 Assassins)" originally directed by Eiichi Kudo. The original film tells the story of thirteen samurai who set out to assassinate a ruthless daimyo lord.

No casting has been announced yet, but filming is set to begin this July, so it won't be long before we see some names attached to these thirteen sword-wielders. For now check out the trailer for the original "Juusan-nin no Shikaku (The 13 Assassins)" below.
