Just before we put the Pow-Wow blog on a well earned two week break I had a chance to see Hirokazu Kore-eda's latest film "Air Doll" (read my full review here). Of course no one really ever doubted that "Air Doll" was going to get a DVD release here in North America, but over the break confirmation came as to who will be putting this magical romance onto video store shelves, and who exactly is a bit of a surprise.
"Air Doll" has been picked up by Palisades Tartan for distribution in both the U.S. and U.K., and yes you heard that right - Tartan. As you all know Tartan went belly up last year and since then the fate of the company and its catalogue of art house and foreign films has been in question. Last July New York-based securitization and P&A financing company Palisades Media picked up the rights to the Tartan films, but since then there hasn't been much movement on how this new partnership was moving forward and getting films out to the public. It's good to see that Tartan hasn't lost its taste for quality Asian films, but as of right now no firm street for a DVD of "Air Doll" has been announced.
