Last night the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival held a reception at the Toronto offices of The Japan Foundation to announce the full line-up for their 13th year and as usual the fest, which focuses on films from across Asia, has come up with a stellar line-up, and one that holds some treats for Japanese film fans.
The big news is that Reel Asian will be hosting the Canadian premiere of Yoshihiro Nakamura's "Fish Story". The adaptation of Kotaro Isaka's novel about a one-hit wonder punk band and their single that may very well end up saving the world stars Atsushi Itô, Kengo Kora, and Nao Omori amongst others. That screening will take place on Saturday, November 14th at 10:00 PM at the University of Toronto's Innis Town Hall Theatre.
The ties to Japan don't just end there, though. Besides "Fish Story" Reel Asian will be presenting Dave Boyle's comedy "White on Rice" starring Hiroshi Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Letters from Iwo Jima) as the lovable but bumbling Jimmy, a Japanese man looking for love and direction after a messy divorce. That screening will also be taking at Innis Town Hall on November 14th at 5:00 PM. In my capacity as co-programmer of the Shinsedai Cinema Festival I'd like to mention that we are very proud to be co-presenting both of these films.
