by Chris MaGee Now here's a very intriguing forthcoming film. Lord knows there have been and continue to be films based on manga, anime series, bestselling novels, and of course the new batch of blog and cellphone novels... but how many films do you know that are based on the diaries of a 19th-century samurai? That's excatly what the folks at Shochiku, Asmik Ace and director Yoshimitsu Morita are currently working on. Morita, the man who brought us the contemporary Japanese classic "The Family Game" will be helming "Bushi no Kakeibo (Household Accounts of the Samurai)" which is based on a historical novel by scholar Michifumi Isoda which in turn was based upon the real-life accounts of a samurai who witnessed the waning days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the arrival of Admiral Perry's Black Ships in Tokyo Bay, and the eventual Meiji Restoration which saw the modernization of Japan.
"Bushi no Kakeibo" will star Masato Sakai (above right) as Hachidaime Naoyuki, an accountant and third-generation samurai whose social-standing begins to decline as the days of the Shogunate fade and the samurai are outlawed by Emperor Meiji. Actress Yukie Nakama will star opposite Sakai as his wife who must stand by her husband as he slips down the social ladder.
"Bushi no Kakeibo" is slated for a late 2010 release. Thanks to Nippon Cinema for this story.

Oooh! I'm excited about this one. Love Masato Sakai in Two in Tracksuits, which showed his range as an actor. Although I find him a bit hammy in Atsu Hime (the NHK Taiga Drama), it probably landed him this role.
