Berlin's Künstlerhaus Bethanien exhibits sketches by Oshii, Anno and Studio 4°C

by Chris MaGee

If you're living in or visiting Berlin during the next couple of months here's an event that you won't want to miss. Les Jardins des Pilotes in cooperation with 2dk is presenting an exhibition of original sketches, storyboards and animation stills by some of the best known anime directors and artists at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien. Titled "Proto Anime Cut" the goal of the exhibition is to explore the "arenas of action and narrative scenarios" from popular anime films such as Hideaki Anno's "Neon Genesis Evangelion", Mamoru Oshii's "Ghost in the Shell", Koji Morimoto's "Dimension Bomb" and Studio 4°C's "Genius Party". What's best is many of these sketches have never been exhibited in Germany before.

The exhibition's website has some great examples of the work the curators have pulled together like the above cityscape sketch by Hiromasa Ogura from "Ghost in the Shell". Check out all the images posted by clicking here.

"Proto Anime Cut" runs at Berlin's Künstlerhaus Bethanien from January 21st through March 6th. Thanks to Wildground's Facebook page for the heads up.
