Tokyograph by way of Jason Gray has finally spilled the beans on the director and star of the upcoming return of the notorious Sada Abe to the big screen, and I couldn’t be more excited!
The film’s title will be “Johnen: Sada no Ai” and it turns out that Sada will be played by Aya Sugimoto, an actress who has already had a brush with the sexually explicit remake bug when she starred in Takashi Ishii’s “Flower and Snake” in 2004, but the real news is the director… Rokuro Mochizuki!
Mochizuki directed what I think are three of the strongest yakuza films ever made: “Another Lonely Hitman”, “Onibi: Fire Within”, and “Yakuza in Love”, in fact “Hitman” is probably my favorite yakuza film out there. He fell into a bit on an artistic Bermuda Triangle in the past few years, especially here in the West, mostly directing uninspired straight to video projects, but here’s hoping that this is his return to form and to the spotlight. On May 31st Japanese audiences will get a chance to decide for themselves on when “Johnen: Sada no Ai” hits theatres.
