Hollywood remake of “Death Note” on the way

by Chris MaGee

The net if buzzing this morning with news that Vertigo Entertainment is planning a remake of Shusuke Kaneko wildly popular manga adaptation “Death Note”. The story of Light Yagami, a Japanese university student who goes on a crusade against criminals using a mysterious book with the power to kill and his pursuit by a young detective named simply L raked in $44.5 million across Asia, so of course Hollywood wants a piece of the pie.

Vertigo Entertainment, the company behind such J-horror/ Asian blockbuster remakes as the Academy Award winning “The Departed” as well as the dismal “Dark Water” and “The Eye”, have pegged the untested screenwriting team of Vlas and Charles Parlapanides to pen the script. The fact that these two have only written for a new CW show called “Undercover” does not bode well, I’m afraid…

No word yet as to a release date or cast, but we’ll keep our eyes online for any future details.

Thanks to Tokyograph for the report.
