Over the weekend SciFi Japan posted extensive information about a new independently produced kaiju/ tokusatsu movie titled simply “G”. The story follows two soldier-scientists Garaemon and Goda who both develop new, top secret bio-mechanical weapons for the Japanese Self Defence Forces. After their lab is ambushed by a group of industrial terrorists Garaemon injects himself with his untested “body reinforcing agent” that does much more than he expected. Transformed into a rampaging monster he begins to destroy Tokyo. Only his friend and colleague Goda can stop him by using his own robotic body armour. Who will stand victorious after this momentous battle?
Only 48 minutes in length “G” has taken director and special effects technician Kiyotaka Taguchi almost eight years to produce. The project started in 2000 when Taguchi was attending The Nikkatsu Geijitsu Gakuin, most of the footage being shot with a digital handycam. Utilizing the skills that he picked up working on such films as Takashi Shimizu’s English remake of “The Grudge 2”, 2000’s “Godzilla vs. Megaguirus” and 2001’s “Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Daikaiju Sogougeki” Taguchi has created an homage to the monster movies that he grew up with. “Making a kaiju film has been a dream of mine since childhood,” he tells SciFi Japan, and if the trailer for “G” is any indication Taguchi has definitely made his dream a reality.
