Yoshihiko Matsui breaks 22 year silence with "Where are We Going?"

by Chris MaGee

A few weeks back I posted the trailer for Yoshihiko Matsui's blistering and experimental 1986 film "Noisy Requiem" in our Weekly Trailers column, so when I saw this story at Kaiju Shakedown about how Matsui has broken the 22 year silence that occurred after he completed "Requiem" I knew I wanted to post it here.

"Doko ni Iku no? (Where are We Going?)" is the story of Akira, a gay worker in a machine shop who meets and falls in love, a "new-half", the Japanese term for a transexual, named Anzu. The pair are drawn together by mutual attraction, a feeling of alienation and a murder that they both must cover up.

The film definitely sounds intriguing and I am so glad that Matsui has actually cast a real transexual, also named Anzu in the film. I remember seeing Itsumichi Isomura's 1996 film "Close Your Eyes and Hold Me" a few years back and shutting it off in disgust because even though it had a similar plotline about a love affair between a gay man and a transexual Isomura made the bone-headed decision to cast buxom actress Kumiko Takeda of such cinematic gems as "Zero Woman 3" and "24 Hour Playboy" as the "new-half" love interest. Ugh...

What's especially good news is that distributor Eleven Arts is optioning "Doko ni Iku no? (Where are We Going?)" for sale to North American buyers. Hopefully we'll see this fascinating sounding film as a Region 1 DVD sooner than later.

Follow the link above to read a review of the film, an interview with Yoshihiko Matsui, and most importantly watch the trailer for the film.
