We've been following director Yoshihiro Nakamura's screen adaptation of Kotaro Isaka's novel "Fish Story" since it was announced back in June. The film stars Atsushi Ito, Kengo Kora, Kiyohiko Shibukawa and Kazuki Namioka as members of a punk rock band called Gekirin whose single hit song "Fish Story" affects the lives of three different people in three different times between 1975 ands 2012. The song even ends up saving the world.
Well, it looks like the four actors playing Gekirin will be blurring the lines between fiction and reality when they pull a Spinal Tap and release their own album on March 9th called "Drive Far". Apparently all the actors took music lessons before shooting began, especially Atsushi Ito (above center) who underwent intensive one-on-one training with a guitar instructor to get his licks just right.
Japanese musician Kazuyoshi Saito helped the band flesh out their material, writing most of the songs on "Drive Far" and if you're lucky enough to be in Tokyo on March 9th you can see and hear the Gekirin perform live at Tower Records Shibuya. Gekirin will then hit the big screen when "Fish Story" opens on March 20th.
