Tsukiji to get series treatment

Tokyograph is reporting that the originally one off adaptation of Shogakukan’s manga “Tsukiji Uogashi Sandaime” or “Tsukiji Fish Market Third Generation” is now being developed into a series of films. The sequel has already been green lit with Shingo Matsubara returning to direct.

It seems that Shochiku wants to take the story of a former banker who inherits a stall in the famed fish market and turn it into a feel good series similar to Yoji Yamada’s Tora-san films. Like the adventures of affable wanderer, Kuruma Torajiro, Shochiku plans to release a “Tsukiji Fish Market” film yearly, but it still remains to be seen if lightning will strike twice. The Tora-san series holds the Guinness World Record for the longest film series in cinema history, 48 films over 27 years and helped keep Shochiku afloat during the economic doldrums that plagued the Japanese film industry during the 1970’s and 80’s. I guess we’ll have to wait and see until late this year when “Tsukiji Fish Market Third Generation” opens in Japanese theatres.
